The artist has donated the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the Britain's small concert spaces.

He was presented with the prize on October 16 as his third album his work was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.

He has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in appreciation of the essential function local spots played in his early career.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was beginning," stated Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports smaller concert halls.

Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation supported venues that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties stemming from floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces received funding support in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The concept that revenue from shows in large arenas supports the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

The musician is among several artists to donate his award winnings to charitable organizations.

When they earned the trophy in 1996 for their release the album, lead singer the singer announced that the act would contribute their cash to the charity War Child.

That year, musician she divided her award across multiple charities, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I gave a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," the artist told the media.

Previously, they donated their funds to the community center that developed their band, alongside other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners the group donated their award to a MS organization after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," stated artist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted another person's life."

In the past week, the trust shared it had protected two local spots in south-east England, by bringing them into community ownership.

The first in Southampton and the second in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is supported by a national body and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
