Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
