The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
