Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the option to contest specific rulings from the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
